Easily Enhance Event Descriptions with Links, Videos, and More

The Notes field in the Event Listing options gives you the chance to provide a description of your event. What you might not know is that this text box allows you to use HTML to enhance this information with extra content. This lets you do things such as link to other app tabs or even embed a video directly in the description.

Don’t Worry. It’s Really Easy.

There are some very easy things you can do without too much trouble. Try surrounding text in <b></b> or <strong></strong> to get a bold effect. You can also use <i></i> or <em></em> for italics. For more information about formatting basics, we recommend the resources at w3schools.com as a great place to get started.

What we want to do here is look at some very specific things you can do to enhance your event descriptions.

Adding Links

The basic HTML needed for setting up a link is

<a href="WEBSITE_URL">linked text</a>

So what can we do with this?

In-App Links

A great way to make your app more dynamic is to link to other tabs or content in the app itself. We’ve previously discussed how to use the Get URL tool.

The easiest way to use it with the Notes field is to copy the “In-app Hyperlink HTML” option and then replace the placeholder text with whatever you want.

Template:
<a href="#IN_APP_LINK">Any Text Here</a>

Example:
<a href="#profiles">Get Social!</a>

Telephone Number Links

You can also create a telephone number link in your Notes. This isn’t commonly done on standard websites, but it is very useful on a mobile platform which is also a phone. Our Call Link How-to gives an overview of how to create these links:

A good situation for this might be if there are different box-office contacts for different events. Instead of using the main Box Office Telephone feature in the Basic Settings page, you can provide different phone numbers for each event.

Template:
<a href="tel:+TELEPHONE_NUMBER">Telephone Number Here</a>

Example:
<a href="tel:+18005551234">Call the Box-Office at (800) 555-1234</a>

Adding Videos

So a guest artist at an event this season has a really great YouTube video that they’re letting you use to promote the concert. Why not add it to the Notes area of your event listing?

What you want to avoid is using the standard embed code which YouTube provides.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gzbumRck5Lw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Some changes to the code are needed to make sure that it will scale properly on different devices. Copy and paste the following template. Then, replace the placeholder text with the video’s ID. This can be found in the URL of the video.

Template:
<div class="video-details"><div class="embed"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div></div>

Example:
<div class="video-details"><div class="embed"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gzbumRck5Lw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div></div>

This same method should be used for embedding videos in Custom Tabs as well as your event’s Notes field.
